Comenius

Comenius, previously an action under The Socrates Programme, aims to develop knowledge and understanding amongst young people and educators of the European diversity present in cultures, languages and in its values. It also encourages young people to acquire the basic life-skills and competences necessary for their personal development, for future employment and for an active European citizenship.

Comenius focuses on the initial stages of education, from pre-school and primary to secondary school. It tries to address all members of the education community –  not only pupils, teachers, other education staff, but also local authorities, parents' associations & non-government organisations. This measure supports school partnerships, individual mobility of teachers and student teachers, projects for the training of school education staff, and school education networks. It thus aims to enhance the quality of teaching, strengthen its European dimension and promote language learning and mobility. This measure stresses the importance of the following themes for a better Europe: learning in a multi-cultural framework, which is the cornerstone of European citizenship, support for disadvantaged groups, countering under-achievement at school and preventing exclusion.
