European values as promoted by the EU are being further relayed thanks to a project called Tal-Linja ghal Cittadinanza Ewropea. The partners in this EU-funded project are OASI Foundation, Richmond Foundation, Integra Foundation and the Jesuit Refugee Service (Malta).
On the 14th May, a public dialogue was held in Great Siege Square, Valletta. Participating at the session, chaired by Fr. Pierre Grech Marguerat, were Julian Micallef (FME), Dr. Simon Busuttil (MEP), Maria Pia Pisani (Integra) and Fr. Manuel Cordina (OASI).
Discussion started on the value of solidarity, and the need for reciprocity. It was also stated that one of the European values is to allow for the prosperity of its citizens. The Union has created particular ways to see that all its citizens benefit from further cohesion. However it does not limit its actions within its frontiers. It also seeks to assist developing countries across the world. Debate reduced solely to financial considerations would be somewhat poor in this respect.
Views on the liberty, respect and tolerance afforded by the European Union were also voiced. Projects currently undertaken by the organisations involved were explained. Points on related issues, made by some members of the audience, were also discussed.
