Funding for Research on Communication Disorders

comm disord.jpgThe Communication Therapy Division (CTD) within the Institute of Health Care of the University aims high when training speech-language pathologists. It was awarded a Marie Curie Host Fellowship, under the European Union’s 6th Framework Programme to carry out research relating to communication disorders in the Maltese population.

The CTD is seeking to reinforce its research and training capacities, collaborate further with partner institutions, and provide a unique research base within the European community.  A study on communication disorders in Malta is also being conducted. Dr Helen Grech, coordinator of the project at CTD, believes that although competition for EU funding for research is high, many Maltese researchers have the potential to succeed.

The project ends in 2008, but the CT Division is already reaping benefits. Through the hosting of an experienced researcher, a series of workshops, the development of reliable and valid assessment tools, as well as further training in research management , the  research capabilities have improved.

The Division has also teamed up with other European and international institutions and taken up more research activities, involving other European projects and partnerships.
