Malta participated in this project in 2006 under the ARGO Specific Action. This project was carried out by the Detention Service, in partnership with the Ministry for Health. The purpose of the project was to maintain the minimum standards of reception by ensuring that physical conditions, including healthcare, within reception centres are efficient and effective.
In this respect the project has provided adequate accommodation and reception conditions for newly arrived irregular migrants and a medical service to meet the emergency situations as a result of the influx of irregular migrants. It also ensured that the minimum standards of reception were maintained throughout the migration period under consideration and promoted co-operation between the national agencies working in the different fields involved.
The total cost of the project amounted to 911,000 euros, with a total European Union co-financing of 524,000 euros.
