Learning Gilding Techniques

gilders1.jpgGilding involves the application of metal leaves to a surface. The Malta Gilders Association keeps this form of art alive, helping people of all ages express themselves through it.

Through the Leonardo programme, it was able to send 8 trainers on a full time course in Florence, Italy for 2 weeks. The project was entitled 'Preserving and enhancing our heritage through gilding works of art and their preservation'. Threegilders2.jpg very important techniques were learnt:  the use of ‘gesso di Bologna’ (chalk), the method of antiquing of gilding and the use of natural pigments and substances that can be reversed, these being particularly useful for restoration purposes.

These techniques could then be passed on to other members, in turn enriching the local gilding scene. In fact, various local gilders are adopting the methods learnt. Applying for the funds was described as a laborious procedure. Yet with some help, the Association has benefitted very much and the experience was described as “very very positive”! The organisation greatly encourages interested individuals to learn more on the art of gilding and this particular project has surely been of great help.
