The Limestone Heritage was inaugurated on the 5th May 2002 by the Minister of Culture and Education. It was designed to give a thorough insight in certain past and present treasures of these islands. By projecting Malta's historical and cultural heritage, this attraction is a key way of satisfying demands which tomorrow's tourists are increasingly seeking, namely destinations which are unique and attractive. Following this positive feedback from visitors and tour operators alike, in 2003 a decision was taken to invest further in this attraction. This was eventually made possible through the Structural Funds Programme for Malta 2004-2006.
The main objective of this project was to offer a better service to the visitors. As a result of the funding received, The Limestone Heritage acquired and installed fixed display cases, upgraded the walk-through areas by laying new limestone paving and installed a new theatre system. A major feature at The Limestone Heritage - a seven minute documentary introducing the site - was upgraded to digital format. This project also addressed the marketing needs of the site through the production and printing of 200,000 fliers and the design and setting up of a new website.
The beneficiaries of this project include tourists, local residents and students. The project cost amounted to Eur 61,405, of which Eur 21,492 were financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and Eur 15,351 by the Maltese government. These interventions managed to enhance the product offered by The Limestone Heritage, which resulted in a significant increase in the number of visitors.
