Schengen projects financed though Norwegian financial mechanism

Malta's entry into Schengen area required the implementation of a number of changes to certain structures. Structural and operational changes were necessary for the lifting of controls at internal land and sea borders between members of the Schengen area. One of the projects that was planned in order for Malta to be able to meet some of the challenges posed by the entry into the Schengen area was the “Procurement and installation of security/safety equipment for building sites housing SIS equipment” financed through the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.

This project consists of securing three key areas that house and manage Schengen data - namely the Police Data Centre, Backup Site and the International Relations Unit. This included the procurement of closed circuit television systems (CCTV systems - external and internal cameras), security doors and access control equipment such as card readers and finger alarm system, an automatic fire extinguishing system and data storage cabinets. In addition to this, the project included the modification of the server room with structural changes in the power supply. This project, which had a total budget of Euros 294,915, 85% of which was financed through the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, started being implemented in September 2007. It  was finalised by June 2008.
