Success Story for Wasteserv: 100,000 Vehicles Utilize CA Sites since Launch

Civic Amenity (CA) Sites, one of the main waste separation facility projects created by WasteServ Malta Ltd through ERDF funds, reached a significant milestone – by the end of September 2008, 100,000 vehicles had made use of the three facilities currently in operation, with around 18,800 tonnes of separated domestic bulky waste collected.

The Mriehel CA Sites remains the most popular, with more than 68,000 vehicles visiting this facility and carrying 11,800 tonnes since its inauguration in March 2007. The Maghtab CA Site, which is the oldest one (inaugurated in November 2006), has just over 28,000 visitors and has received around 6,000 tonnes. The newest one, namely the site at Hal Far (inaugurated in February 2008), had 7,500 vehicles visiting it and these carried over 1,000 tonnes of separated bulky waste.

Besides reducing the amount of waste going to the landfill, these CA Sites were very effective in reducing drastically the amount of illegal tipping in the Maltese countryside.

The WasteServ Civic Amenity Sites, or centres for bulky waste, are controlled facilities where members of the public can bring and discard a variety of waste items separately. They allow the public to drive through and dispose of different materials including electronic waste, used furniture items, garden waste, cardboard, mattresses and waste oils. Containers to receive the waste fractions, which are normally deposited at the Bring-in Sites, are also available at these facilities.

This project is being part-financed through Structural Funds, with an estimated value of €4.6 million, and includes five facilities (four in Malta and one in Gozo). The Maltese government is co-funding 27% of the project.
