Europe Day Celebrations

On 9 May, Malta together with the other Member States of the European Union, celebrated Europe Day, a day which commemorates European integration, a project that began with French Foreign Affairs Minister, Robert Schuman’s declaration on the same day in 1950.

Various events were organised in Malta jointly by the European Commission’s Representation to Malta and the European Parliament’s office in Malta. MEUSAC was also invited and participated in an event held at St. George’s square in Valletta, which brought together children and youths from Malta’s schools to learn about Europe’s history together in an interactive way.

This year’s logo and slogan for Europe Day emphasised the fact that the European Union brings together twenty-seven different Member States, with twenty-three official languages and different cultures, traditions and customs. However, this is what makes Europe a great mix, uniting diversity.

During the event in St George’s square, which became an area of colourful fun for the children that attended, speeches were also made by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Michael Frendo, Maltese European Commissioner, John Dalli, Bill Martin, Head of the European Commission Representation to Malta and Dr Julian Vassallo, Head of the European Parliament Office in Malta.
